Beyond the Classroom: A Holistic Approach to Rabbinic Formation
Like Torah itself, the Ziegler curriculum has a formal, classroom leg, and a less formal, experiential, and communal aspect. The co-curricular offerings form a significant opportunity to integrate classroom learning with the development of spirit and character. Together, they provide a unique and integrated spiral for depth, wisdom, and growth.
Learning to become a rabbi involves the integration of academic scholarship and skills, self- reflection, and emotional honesty, as well as spiritual depth and nuance. A significant part of the training oered by the Ziegler School takes place outside of the classroom as co-curricular offerings. The school facilitates:
A Holistic Approach to the Rabbinate:
- Regular mentoring sessions: Gain insights and guidance from rabbis, faculty, and deans.
- Student lunches with speakers: Engage with thought leaders from diverse fields.
- School-wide series: Explore contemporary issues and their implications for Judaism life.
- Community building activities: Strengthen bonds with fellow students and faculty and foster a sense of belonging.
- Holiday, festival, and Shabbat programs: Gather as a community for meals, prayer, singing, and learning.
- Skill-building workshops: Enhance your ability to facilitate difficult conversations and respond constructively to multiple viewpoints.
- Lunch & Learn series: Explore a variety of topics related to Judaism thought and practice.
- Hosting and being hosted: Experience the warmth and welcome of the Ziegler community.
These allow students to experience the kind of model communities they will create in their own congregations, schools, and agencies, as well as support them to grow as future rabbis integrating their classroom learning with their own character formation and community development skills.
